The North Star Award is the highest honor presented by Sound + Vision, celebrating the artist whose contributions in the last year exemplify the highest standard in creative vision. Because their impact spans several categories, winning the North Star Award makes the recipient intelligible for other awards. The inaugural winner, celebrating the amazing creative direction behind her tour, film, and overall continued presence around the Renaissance era, is Beyoncé and Parkwood Entertainment.

There’s no denying the genius of Beyoncé, but there are few times that we see it come together piece by piece. Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé granted that opportunity as the singer gave an exclusive look at how her Renaissance World Tour became a reality. Behind-the-scenes clips unveiled the formation of numerous fan-favorite moments from the Renaissance World Tour, like Beyoncé’s creation of the live concept for “Cuff It,” her reluctance-turned-pride in Blue Ivy’s onstage performances, and the perfectionism required to bring a complex idea like the Renaissance World Tour to life.
Film
Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour left a lasting impression by employing queer performers and subtly razzing her fans’ demands to “drop the visuals.” Sticking to the chrome-plated, disco ball-inspired “Alien Superstar” theme of her album, Beyoncé filled the stage with representations of Ball culture, highlighting its impact on the greater pop world. She was joined onstage by her daughter Blue, whose own commitment to the choreography showed in the marked improvement from her first show to her last. Beyoncé dazzled in costumes that nodded to in-jokes with her fans, such as
Tour
The normally reclusive Beyoncé was much more active on social media during the tour, expanding on the imagery launched by the Renaissance album. She posted a new fit pic from seemingly every stop across the nation, both showcasing each unique lewk in exquisite detail and building interest in future ensembles. She even used Instagram to share the first look at the Renaissance film, highlighting the power of the direct-to-audience connection – a power she has mastered.
Campaign
Under direction from the singer herself, Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé completed the first act of Beyoncé’s Renaissance story by showcasing her talents as a filmmaker and the intention and intricacy she used to compose one of her most unique eras to date.
a bee costume that acknowledged the fact they call themselves the BeyHive as well as her custom Loewe “hands” bodysuit. She even incorporated the “disco horse” from the Renaissance cover designed by Nicholas Des Jardins, descending from on high to ride her glimmering steed over stadiums around the globe.
